Abstract: 
Socially assistive robots have shown promise in supporting people living with dementia (PlwD) by reducing stress and promoting engagement. We know that PlwD prefer robots with fur and pet-like embodiment. However, when it comes to other embodiment features of robots, such as the design of the eyes, we still lack knowledge about PlwD’s preferences. We conducted a pilot study co-exploring playful materials with PlwD and recruited four participants living in a care home for 10 co-exploration sessions. In this report, we present a side product of the original study: the importance of eye design when designing technologies for PlwD. We found that 1) the eyes are an important focal point for PlwD during interactions, 2) eye movement is interpreted as emotions by PlwD, and 3) the size, shape, and complexity of the eyes are crucial for recognition.
