Abstract:

My thesis focuses on the design of a clay-built kindergarten in Kottingbrunn on a plot of land put up for tender by the municipality. The goal is to integrate architecture, materials, and pedagogy into a spatial concept. The kindergarten is conceived not merely as a functional facility, but as a living space that facilitates movement, quiet time, and collaborative learning. The foundation is the Reggio approach, that views the child as an active and competent participant. Space and environment are regarded as the “third educator” and are intended to influence perception, interaction, and learning processes. This gives rise to the task of designing an environment that fosters openness, engagement, and curiosity. Aspects such as the influence of light, the effect of materials or the transitions between indoor and outdoor areas are of particular importance.Clay is an ideal building material for the overall concept. Because it occurs naturally in Lower Austria, it is particularly well-suited in terms of sustainability. Additionally, properties such as its tactile quality and thermal mass ensure a pleasant indoor environment within the kindergarten. In the design, the properties of the clay are further emphasized by a warm and natural atmosphere with earthy colors. The concept is complemented by green roofs and an outdoor space that serves as both a play area and a natural experience. The site in Kottingbrunn, as specified in the call for proposals, provides the specific framework for the project. The goal is to create a preschool that functions as an integral part of the local community and, through the use of resource-efficient materials and a modern educational approach, makes a significant contribution to the future of the community.
