Abstract:
Diversity is good for science. Literature tells us that diverse teams are more productive, more creative, able to solve more challenging scientific problems, and so on. Diversity initiatives though often focus on gender and are reduced to tick box exercises. While gender is certainly important, there are so many other dimensions of diversity that matter for good science. Yet even if we can identify and promote diverse diversity in our research environments, there remains the very practical matter of how to put that diversity to work in our day-to-day work. This requires critical human relational skills that we are rarely trained in, skills that can make all the difference for creating collegial constructive work environments and realising the value of diversity to do great science together. In this session, we will explore these diverse aspects of diversity and the practical work to make diversity work.
