This thesis studies martingale-transport-based approaches to the calibration of local volatility models. The starting point is the following calibration problem: European option prices provide information about the risk-neutral marginal distributions of the discounted price process at finitely many maturities. The goal is to construct a martingale that matches these distributions at the corresponding times and, in addition, has a Markov or diffusion structure. In contrast to the classical Dupire approach, which requires an interpolation of observed option prices to a full price surface, the approaches considered here start directly from the finitely many marginal distributions and satisfy the martingale property by construction.First, the thesis discusses under which conditions given marginal distributions are compatible with the martingale property. This leads to convex order and to classical existence results by Strassen, Kellerer and Lowther. Afterwards, the Markov-functional framework is introduced. In this framework, the price process is represented as a time-dependent transformation of an auxiliary Markovprocess. The martingale condition, the evolution of the distribution of the auxiliary process and the calibration via a monotone quantile transformation jointly determine the so-called flow function.Within this framework, three constructions are considered: the Bass construction for a single marginal distribution, its extension to several marginal distributions by Conze--Henry-Labordère, which leads to a fixed-point equation, and Zhou's approach, where the auxiliary process is equipped with a local drift function and a piecewise time-homogeneous local volatility model is obtained. For the fixed-point equation of Conze--Henry-Labordère, the results ofAcciaio--Marini--Pammer provide existence, uniqueness and linear convergence of the corresponding fixed-point iteration. Zhou's construction is placed in atheoretical context using an existence result by Ekström--Hobson--Janson--Tysk for time-homogeneous martingale diffusions. However, the existence of a solution to the coupled fixed-point problem appearing in Zhou's construction remains open. Finally, the thesis compares the different model structures, discusses the transition from theoretical constructions to practical calibration and points out open questions, in particular concerning existence, regularity and stabilityof Zhou's construction.
