Metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) as molecular, porous and 0D structures are the main subject of this thesis as well as their implementation in photocatalytic reactions. Deploying several transitions metal constituting MOPs as co-catalysts impregnated on TiO2 formed the photocatalytic active composites which were studied in their performance for hydrogen generation. Furthermore, Fe-based MOPs were invented and tested for their activity in photocatalytic ammonia production. Among one of the main goals was the solvothermal synthesis of several MOPs, the synthesis of some metal precursors and organic linkers with varying functionalities which built up the MOP, was required first. For comparison reasons within a metal-series, the synthesis of the corresponding metal-organic frameworks (HKUST-1-type) was also required. Impregnation of TiO2 particles was done prior to photocatalytic experiments. Characterization included the confirmation of properly formed MOPs via powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), attenuated total reflexion Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) as well as altering during the composite formation which was evaluated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Homogeneous distribution of MOPs on the surface of TiO2 was visually determined by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM/EDX). Subsequent to photocatalysis, leaching was determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and total reflexion X-ray fluorescence (TXRF). The photocatalytic activity was linked to the homogeneity and strength of interaction between co-catalyst and TiO2, stability of the MOP regarding the intermetallic bond (if present) and potential solvation processes during the experiment. Finally, the reusability was discussed from the calculated leaching values.
