Abstract:

The objective of this masters thesis is to generate a compass which indicates how the Guest House Alpina, situated in the East Tyrolian village of St. Jakob in Defereggental, can be adapted towards flexible usage based on the imperatives and implications of both contemporary and traditional architecture.Through the analysis of the historic development of the region and the community of St. Jakob as well as the local tourism, a deeper appreciation of the requirements for the Guest House is created. By analysing the different construction phases of the existing guest accommodation, a new design is presented which can be seen as another development stage in the ongoing evolution of the Guest House. The definition of a new target group, functional changes in the ground plans, increasing living comfort, respecting traditional design vocabulary and the landscape context as well as using authentic materials, form a base on which a future-oriented realignment can be reached.
