Die Regionalbahn 'Vinschgaubahn' verläuft auf der Strecke zwischen Meran/Merano und Mals/Malles in Südtirol. Sie wurde im Jahr 1991 geschlossen und 2005 wieder reaktiviert. Mit einem neuen Gesamtkonzept, sanierten Haltestelle und einem gesteigerten Komfort, schaffte man bald über zwei Millionen Fahrgäste im Jahr. Eine Anzahl mit der im Vorhinein niemand gerechnet hätte. In einem ersten Punkt beschreibt diese Masterarbeit die Vorgänge welche zur Schließung führten und was in den Jahren bis zur Reaktivierung passierte. Darauf folgend wird das neue Konzept untersucht und die Anstrengungen beleuchtet, welche unternommen wurden um die Vinschgaubahn wieder für die Fahrgäste attraktiv zu machen. Zudem wird der Einfluss der Reaktivierung auf den restlichen öffentlichen Nahverkehr in Südtirol behandelt und wie sich die Vinschgaubahn bis heute entwickelt hat. Als letzter Punkt werden zukünftige Ausbaumaßnahmen in Richtung Schweiz, Italien und Nordtirol untersucht.

The in 2005 reactivated regional train 'Vinschgaubahn' runs between the cities Meran/Merano and Mals/Malles in Southern-Tyrol and was first closed in 1991. With a new concept, refurbished train stations and a new level of comfort, they fast gain more than two million passengers a year, which beforehand nobody expects. At first this master-thesis describes the circumstances, why the Vinschgaubahn get closed in first time and what happened between closing and the time of reactivation. Then it investigates the new concept, the efforts to make the new railway attractive to the people, how it influences the southern-tyrol public transport system and what happened between 2005 and now. The last passage deals about future projects to extend the railway to Switzerland, Northern-Tyrol or to southern Italian regions.
