Stahl im Wohnbau : Transformation des Stahlskeletts in die gründerzeitliche Stadtstruktur - Aufstockung zur Nachverdichtung

Abstract

Die Verwendung von Stahl im Wohnbau hat eine lange Geschichte. Die Anfänge liegen beim Eisenbahnbau und reichen bis hin zur Verwendung für Hochhäuser. Im 20. Jahrhundert entwickelten sich daraus einige Einfamilienhäuser aus Stahl, die prägend für die Architekturgeschichte waren. Zu dieser Zeit sah man im Baustoff Stahl das Ideal. Die „Case Study Houses“ dienten beispielsweise als Prototypen für reproduzierbare und dadurch leistbare Einfamilienhäuser aus Stahl in moderner Formensprache. Heute wird das Material überwiegend für schwierige Bauaufgaben und Bauplätze gewählt. Stahl kommt dort als leisungsstarker und leichter Baustoff mit hohem Vorfertigungsgrad zum Einsatz. Herkömmliche Wohnbauten werden nach wie vor in Stahlbeton, Holz oder Ziegel geplant. Angesichts der architektonischen Ikonen, stellte sich mir die Frage, warum kein Stahl? Im ersten Teil der Arbeit wurde die Thematik von „Stahl im Wohnbau“ anhand einiger dieser ikonischen Stahlhäuser näher beleuchtet. Dazu wurden das Farnsworth House von Mies, eine aufgeständerte Konstruktion auf einem flachen Grundstück, das Smith House von Ellwood, ein im Hang stehendes Skelett und das Apartment von Paul Rudolph, ein Penthouse, dass auf ein bestehendes Gebäude gesetzt wurde, näher untersucht und verglichen. Durch den Vergleich mit jeweils ähnlichen Projekten wurden Entwurfsmethoden, Qualitäten und Probleme aufgezeigt. Durch das Thema der Nachverdichtung bekommt Stahl auch in Wien wieder an Bedeutung. Ein großes Potential stellen dabei die gründerzeitlichen Bauten dar, die das Stadtbild prägen. Durch Dachgeschossausbauten und Aufstockungen kann mitten in der Stadt neuer Wohnraum geschaffen werden. Vorherrschende Konstruktionsmethode sind Stahlgerüste, die auf den Bestand gesetzt werden. Doch in manchen Fällen könnte man auch eine Aufstockung um mehrere Geschosse in Betracht ziehen. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit wurde ein zentral gelegenes, gründerzeitliches Gebäude um das Doppelte der Gebäudehöhe aufgestockt. Ziel war es, zu zeigen, wie zum einen eine mehrgeschossige Aufstockung im städtischen Kontext aussehen könnte und zum anderen die Qualitäten eines Einfamilienhauses in einen Wohnbau zu transformieren, in diesem Fall zum „Haus am Haus“. Dabei sind vor allem Erkenntnisse aus der Analyse wie das Zusammenspiel zwischen Raum und Konstruktion oder auch die Qualitäten von geschützten Freiräumen und der Bezug zu Grünflächen in den Entwurf eingeflossen.

The development of steel has a long history with its beginnings going back to railway construction as well as the use in skyscrapers. In the twentieth century, it developed into the construction of single family homes. Some of them were influental for the history of architecture. At that time, steel structures seemed to be the ideal. For example, the „Case Study Houses“ served as a prototype for reproducible and therefore affordable single family homes in a modern design. Nowadays, the material is mostly chosen for difficult buildings and building sites that require a powerful and light construction. The high degree of prefabrication and the reduced construction time are advantages too. Conventional, residental buildings are made out of concrete, wood or bricks. Due to the architectural references, the question arises, why steel is not used anymore. In the first part of the thesis, the topic of „steel in residential buildings“ according to iconic steel houses will be discussed. The Farnsworth House of Mies, resting on eight pillars on a flat lot, Ellwood‘s Smith House, a hillside skeleton and Paul Rudolph‘s apartment, a penthouse placed on the top of an existing building, were examined and compared with similar projects. As a result, qualities, methods and problems were identified. Particularly because of topics like densification, steel has become increasingly important in the last years in Vienna. Vienna‘s greatest potential is represented by the buildings of the late nineteenth century, which are characterizing the urban landscape. Loft conversions and extensions result in new living space in the middle of the city. A predominant construction method is the usage of steel frames that are being placed on top of existing buildings. In some cases the addition of more than one storey would be possible as well. In the second part of the thesis, several storeys were added to a chosen building of the late nineteenth century situated in this area. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate how a multi-storey addition in an urban context could look like and how the qualities of a single-family home can be incorporated into a residential building, in this case into a „house on the house“.The qualities and perceptions that were identified in the analysis of the first part of the thesis have been incorporated into the design of this building. Examples are the interaction between space and construction or the qualities of a protected outside space and the view into the greenery.
