Abstract:

This master-thesis project is based on a theoretical approach of embassies and gives a brief historical overview regarding their evolution since the eighteenth century. Followed by a more in-depth review of the development of German embassy buildings, three examples located in Constantinople and Vienna are illustrated. The analysis of the building site's historical and urbanistic aspects lays the foundation for the concept. Derived from the inherent duality of diplomacy, the design focuses on balancing the need for public transparency as well as diplomatic discretion and privacy. The resulting building-volumes as well as the surface materials meet those requirements and highlight the duality of the concept. The arrangement of functions throughout the building underlines the importance of variable and sustainable use of space in order to create an environment that supports cultural and commercial exchange. The underlying logic of this design emphasizes the importance of bilateral and multilateral relations and cooperations, which is fundamental in the face of increasing cultural and economic globalization.
