Abstract:

The automotive industry is on the verge of a substantial change. The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has been increasing drastically over the last few years and the air quality in the industrialized world has reached alarming levels due to further air pollutants. Legislation is being passed on a yearly basis due to these disturbing prospects. Several automobile manufacturers have lately tried to illegally manipulate their emissions during exhaust-gas measurements to meet the criteria of the, especially in the USA, tough emission regulations while not losing the performance of their engine. The internal combustion engine, especially the diesel engine, has come under fire since the news about the ‘emission scandal’ broke loose. This thesis shall give a detailed overview of the internal combustion engine, the pollutants which arise due to the combustion process as well as the newest technology used to reduce the amount of pollutants created. It starts off with an elaborate view of the petrol and diesel engine with its fuel and combustion processes respectively. Subsequently it will characterize the most important conventional air pollutants (NOx, CO, CH, SO2, PM) and the greenhouse gas CO2 as well as the formation of these pollutants by the two conventional internal combustion engines. Following this is a depiction of the regulations (in the USA and Europe) regarding emission reduction and of the most relevant regulations regarding emission measurement of internal combustion engines. The focus of this thesis is however on the measures presented or taken by the automotive industry in tackling the duty of reducing the emission of pollutants caused by engines in these automobiles. New motor concepts have been introduced, inner and outer measures for pollutant reduction (e. g. secondary pollutant reduction) designed and installed as well as alternative engines and fuels presented. Secondary pollutant reduction systems (e. g. NSC and NH3-SCR), which have been installed in most automobiles today, are slowly reaching their limit of success. Legislation has been toughening their limits on emissions, which will make a change to alternative engines and fuels inevitable.
