This thesis deals with the design of a new sports complex on the ASKÖ (Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Körperkultur und Sport in Österreich) area Auf der Schmelz in Vienna. Auf der Schmelz is a unique space in Vienna. Centrally located, easily accessible and in the midst of a densely populated area, it could be used manifoldly as public open space. Covering almost 30 hectares of land, this area is divided among allotment gardens, the university sports institute, a school, ASKÖ and a dormitory for university students. Public areas are limited to pathways and few small surrounding areas. The central focus of this project is the ASKÖ sports complex. In 2012 the main building was demolished. Since then, facilities such as changing rooms, showers, storage, facility management and restaurant have been accommodated in a container village. The new building most probably would have been able to fulfill all these necessities. After opening, however, it turned out that sufficient spaces were not available. The facilities had to remain in the container village. Considering these problems as well as the lack of public space available, this project offers a concept for accommodating required facilities as well as creating sufficient spaces for public use and new features.
