Glatz, S. (2013).

The history of Jews shows that Jewish communities were located in Lower Austria during the Middle Ages as well as in the modern period. It is also reported that during this time Jewish settlements and synagogues resided in Oberwaltersdorf and Ebenfurth. In this study the well-known locations of the synagogue of Oberwaltersdorf at Badener Straße 13 and of Ebenfurth at Annagasse 2 will be virtually reconstructed. In the case of Oberwaltersdorf it is possible that the synagogue existed throughout both periods. In the case of Ebenfurth there are evidences which prove that the synagogue, which was located on the city wall, existed during the Jewish settlement in the 17th Century. Hence, it can be assigned to the early modern period. As the research of historical sources referring to the time period when the two synagogues were active concluded with insufficient information, a detailed study of similar objects was conducted, and formed the basis for the virtual reconstruction. Individual characteristics such as the urban context, the layout, the design and alignment of the entrance, the design of the windows on the east wall, the low ground level, the vaulted forms, the building height and roof shape, the interior design as well as the synagogue for women and the Mikwe were examined and compared. Thus the obtained information is transferred to both locations. Three variations for Oberwaltersdorf and one for Ebenfurth were developed. The 3D models were created with the program ArchiCAD and finally visualized with Atlantis.
