Cloud formation is one of the big uncertainties in our climate models as of now. Especially high altitude clouds don't behave as the theory would predict. One possibility for this unpredictable behavior are metastable phases. Two of these phases, cubic ice and alpha NAT, are adressed in this work. The formation of cubic ice could be reproduced under atmospheric conditions, by using model substances. This was confirmed via X-Ray Diffraction. The until now unknown phase, alpha NAT, could be produced and was analyzed by X-Ray and Neutrondiffraction. The combination of these datasets allowed us to propose a structure for alpha NAT.
