Abstract:
Strict safety standards in Europe and Asia regarding the use of reagent directly in hazardous gaseous form are driving the development of alternative methods to provide reagent for flue gas treatment processes. These alternatives are intensively developed in the past years and have to meet several technical and economical aspects in order to be realized in the big scale. The possibilities for the use of solid nitrogen fertilizer granulate or prills as reagent for emission abatement processes were examined. The whole process from phase change to chemical intermediates as well as the final products including their reaction affecting parameters was described. A detailed look, separately at the decomposition in the first step and further chemical reaction in the second step was made in order to achieve a better understanding of the sub-steps. The research results clearly showed that quantitative and qualitative conversion of nitrogen based fertilizer is possible from a thermo-chemical standpoint. Furthermore existing technical solutions of decomposition devices and facilities were examined to evaluate the practical measures used in best available technologies (BAT) today. Devices and facilities of both mobile and industrial applications were analyzed to get an extensive overview of the technologies and methods actually used today. A wide variety of solutions is found in the industry based on different starting materials such as aqueous fertilizer solution with varying concentrations but also grained fertilizer dust and liquefied fertilizer. As heat source hot gas streams of either air or flue gas available from the initial process but also completely independent sources such as electricity are used. The described technologies were also evaluated regarding their patent status in order to show possibilities for future inventions and market development. The idea of a future invention for a new product gas creation method was made which is based on recent results achieved from laboratory tests made over the past decade with varying gas and reagent compositions. A first theoretical thermodynamic estimation was made and showed that the energy demand is similar or higher than the one of existing technologies. The results were not yet verified in a laboratory scale plant or pilot plant.
