Photocatalytic systems consisting of a photosensitizer and a photocatalyst, such as Ru and Re-based catalysts, show high selectivity for carbon monoxide (CO) formation, allowing for visible-light photocatalyzed reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2). Ionic liquids (IL) have considerable potential as cooperative media since they can solubilize large concentrations of CO2, and are also able to activate CO2. Materials that combine both photocatalyst and IL are, thus, highly desirable for a photocatalytic CO2 reduction to generate CO under benign conditions. Consequently, in this work different IL-photocatalyst polymers were developed by combining the IL 1-butyl-3-vinylimidazolium chloride and photocatalytically active Re- and Ru-complexes via radical co-polymerization, utilizing varying ratios of photocatalytic materials with vinyl functionalized ligand systems. The desired materials were obtained in high yields, and the composition of the synthesized materials was confirmed through analysis.
