Abstract:

The new Euro VI emission limits, that will be valid for passenger cars in Europe from the end of 2014, force automobile manufacturers to take further measures to reduce the emissions of vehicles. Besides the well known internal engine measures to reduce emissions, exhaust treatment systems must be installed. For diesel powered passenger cars the drastic reduction of the limit for nitrogen oxide from 180 mg/km (EU V) to 80 mg/km (EU VI) is a great challenge. As treatment systems the NOx storage catalyst and the SCR (selective catalytic reduction) catalyst are available. For the SCR system, an additional fluid, called AdBlue has to be used. The emissions, that occur by the manufacturing process of this additional fluid, which is based on urea and water, are the main focus in this thesis. After the examination of the production process of urea ¿ also further production processes were highlighted - using a life cycle assessment the main conclusion is that the majority of emissions still arise in the use of the vehicle. Additional emissions of ammonia result mainly in an ammonia slip in the vehicle, only a small portion is formed in the production of AdBlue. So, by the use of a SCR system a significant reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions can be achieved.
