Abstract:

The objective of the present master thesis is to build a new Macro-Thermobalance with a sample mass of 100 g and more. The purpose of this new balance is to obtain a better understanding of the behaviour of different substances. The first part of the thesis reviews and compares different concepts of Macro-Thermobalances, which can be found in the literature. Based on that information, a new concept is introduced and tested using a cold model. In addition to experiments, supporting simulations are conducted to achieve a better understanding of the balance characteristics. The knowledge and experience gained in the previous section helps to build a new setup and a metal reactor. The first step in this process is to characterise the system with experiments and simulations. The simulation helps to get a better insight into the heat transition between the reactor wall and the fluid. The following experiments are mainly blank tests which reveal that temperature is one of the main influence parameters in the setup. Since it is very difficult to obtain reproducible results with the blank tests, a mathematical model is introduced to compensate for measurement errors caused by the raising temperature during an experiment. To validate the whole setup, experiments with magnesium sulphate are conducted. This substance has the advantage of a big mass decrease at a relatively low temperature. The results show that the setup can be used for substances with an expected high mass loss. Hydrated magnesium sulphate is expected to have a mass decrease of ~ 50 %. With a sample mass of nearly 100 g, a maximum discrepancy of 0,9 g between the real and the measured mass loss during the first experiment is observed. In the second experiment, the deviation is significantly lower with 0,02 g. The final section introduces several recommendations for an improvement of the existing setup, as well as a concept for a new setup. One of the main features of the new concept is a more uniform temperature distribution in the heating area and the reactor.
