Peyer, T. (2014).

This Master Thesis is dealing with the revaluation of the Area Schweden- Morzinplatz, situated on the edge of the first district of Vienna. This spacial sequence has included a multitude of megainfrastructure, which explains the obvious neglect of the quay, going hand in hand with the demolition of the Viennese townwall increasing significantly until World War II. The practical part of this Thesis suggests to close the existing gap in the ring road with a big scale structure Ringstrassenbau. Eventuelly, the neglected space will again be a part of the urban fabric. This approach is leading to the teoretical Part of my Master Thesis, which is dealing with big scale fassades in modern cities. Termology such as Fassade and City will be explained as well as their mutual effects. With the upcoming industrialisation the cities are growing and a new scale is set in place, which introduces not only bigger disances and new types of buildings but also demands a reinterpretation of social existing and social organisation, as well as the introduction of anonymity and abstraction. These are the major changements modern cities have to face. The question of how to organise a modern mega structure is a recurring topic. To answer the question how to organise the total city, even the smallest details have to be set in place. The fassade plays a major role when it comes to connecting the interior with the exterior, as one can see it as a screen that communicates between the urban and the architectural scale. To the exterior it can talks about making important references even moral concepts and to the interior it works as a frame towards city life. In the end one can say that the fassade is of central importance for the single building to finally connect to the city and to fit in or even create an urban landscape. On the basis of theoretical theories and specific examples this Master Thesis is making the challenge of structural design of big scale fassades subject of discussion.
