Die globale Vernetzung der Welt hat viele Auswirkungen auf unser alltägliches Leben. Information und Waren aus entfernten Gebieten sind ständig verfügbar. Die Flexibilisierung hat zunehmend auch unser Arbeitsleben erreicht. Viele verbringen durch ihren Job längere Aufenthalte im Ausland. Für diese Dauer gibt es neben der Unterbringung in einem Hotel auch Alternativen. Die Arbeit gibt einen Vorschlag für ein Boardinghouse in der Webgasse im sechsten Wiener Gemeindebezirk. Der Typus "Boardinghouse" ist heute im Spannungsfeld zwischen dem herkömmlichen Hotel, dem Wohnheim und dem städtischen Wohnhaus zu finden. Der Begriff des Boardinghouses hat jedoch eine längere Geschichte. Bereits um 1900 entwickelten sich in Deutschland so genannte Einküchen- oder Servicehäuser. Um die Emanzipation der Frauen voranzutreiben wurde eine Reform der Hauswirtschaft propagiert. Die Gemeinschaftsküche, kollektive Hauswirtschaftsführung sowie diverse Serviceeinrichtungen sollten ein von der Hauswirtschaft befreites Familienleben garantieren. Um 1920 entwickelten sich in Russland die Kommunehäuser, in der ebenfalls die gemeinschaftliche Bewältigung der Arbeit im Vordergrund stand. 1930 verschrieb sich auch die damalige Architekturavantgarde dieser neuen Bauaufgabe. Die Suche nach der "Wohnung für das Existenzminimum" brachte Boardinghäuser mit 1- bis 2-Zimmer Apartments und großflächigen Gemeinschaftseinrichtungen. Die Entwicklung wurde durch den 2. Weltkrieg gestoppt. Erst um 1980 erschien der Begriff wieder im europäischen Raum, diesmal aber als Hotelkategorie in der die Zimmer größer und besser ausgestattet waren und für einen längeren Aufenthaltszeitraum vermietet wurden.<br />Das Boardinghaus bietet verschiedensten Menschen aus unterschiedlichen Nationen, Kulturen und Religionen für eine begrenzte Dauer ein neues Zuhause. Ziel des Boardinghauses ist es diesen Menschen, fern ab ihrer gewohnten Umgebung, eine neue Gemeinschaft zur Verfügung zu stellen. Die bauliche Struktur soll die Interaktion und Kommunikation der Bewohner untereinander fördern um dieses soziale Netzwerk entstehen zu lassen.<br />Aus scheinbar lose miteinander verbundenen Baukörpern wird eine kommunikative Struktur aufgebaut, die im Inneren ein zusammenhängendes System aus Aufenthaltszonen bilden. Der Entwurf thematisiert dabei den Gegensatz zwischen Individual- und Gemeinschaftsräumen, der außen durch Masse oder Transparenz augenscheinlich wird. Nach außen hin wird nicht der Eindruck einer abgeschlossenen Einheit erweckt, sondern ein sich mit der Umgebung verzahnendes Gebäude geschaffen. Die Kommunikationszonen stellen das gemeinschaftliche Leben der wechselnden Bewohner, nach außen dar und sorgen so für eine soziale Vernetzung mit der bestehenden Bevölkerung. Die opake "Zimmerblöcke" bieten Privatsphäre, die Gemeinschaftszonen sind transparent, lichtdurchflutet und geprägt durch Ein-, Aus- und Durchblicke. Die Baukörper schließen die Baulücke in der Webgasse und erstrecken sich in die Tiefe in Richtung des Hubert Marischka Parks. Eine Auskragung an der Webgasse übernimmt die Aufgabe des Imageträgers des neuen "Hotels". In diesem Fenster zur Stadt ist eine öffentliche Bar bzw. Club untergebracht. Im Erdgeschoß befindet sich das Restaurant mit Terrasse zum Park. Eine kleine Officezone mit Arbeitsplätzen und Besprechungsraum sowie ein Fitness- und Wellnessbereich runden das Angebot für die Mieter ab. Die Fassade wird durch eine goldglänzende Haut aus Aluminium gebildet. Die Schiebeelemente vor den Fenstern sorgen für ein ständig veränderndes Bild des neuen Hauses.
