Abstract:

Goal of this masters thesis is to create a design for a coffeehouse made of a strawbale/clay construction. The winning entry of the competition for the design of the "Rudolf-Bednar-Park" in 2005 suggested to build a coffeehouse. However, when the design was realized the coffeehouse was not realized due to money saving issues. The authorities decided to create instead a so called "Pergola" which consists of roof measuring exactly the same dimensions as the planned coffeehouse. The idea of this masters thesis is to suggest a building composed of "old" building materials in an innovative way which would lead to cheaper realization costs compared to conventional building methods. The chapter "Einleitung" is about the building plot, the history of the area and the actual "Genius loci". In the following chapter "Grundlagen" I explain the history of these alternative building materials. As well I will explain contemporary strawbale/clay building techniques, and give examples of old and new buildings. The last chapter is called "Entwurf" and shows the actual design of the building I suggest to build in the Rudolf-Bednar-Park.
