Draustege Villach : Verknüpfungsachsen zwischen Fluß und Stadt

Abstract

Villach hat mich mit seinem südlichen Charme und dem eigenwilligen Charakter von jeher fasziniert. Die Draustadt ist keine typische österreichische Stadt: Sie liegt im Herzen von Kärnten und vereint spielerisch die italienische, slawische und österreichische Kultur und ist gleichzeitig ein historischer Verkehrsknoten in den Süden. Mit seinem teils italienischem Flair hat das Zentrum einen ganz eigenwilligen Charakter, welcher auch durch die durchfließende Drau bestimmt wird. In dieser Stadt habe ich meine Schul- und Freizeit verbracht, habe all diese Einflüsse unterbewusst wahrgenommen und bin durch sie geprägt worden. Eines jedoch wurde mir im Laufe meines Architekturstudiums in Bezug auf meine Heimatstadt klar: Villach hat viele unterschiedliche Identitäten und Charaktere in denen beträchtliches Potential steckt, welches sich jedoch nach außen hin nicht zeigt. Es scheint, als wäre vor allem in den letzten paar Jahrzehnten kaum Wert auf ein harmonisches und einprägsames Stadtbild gelegt worden. Mit dieser Arbeit will ich in erster Linie Ideen zur Aufwertung des Stadtraumes Villach liefern. Aufgrund eines Stegreifentwerfens im Zuge meines Studiums, welches den Titel "Villach Waterfront" hatte, setzte ich mich erstmals mit der Wechselwirkung zwischen Stadt und Fluss auseinander und empfand es seitdem als meine Aufgabe, an diesem Thema weiter und ausführlicher zu arbeiten. Diese Arbeit gibt einen Gesamtüberblick über das Stadtgeschehen und bietet Anregungen sowie Denkanstöße. Sie bildet Konzepte aus, wie man den Flussraum wieder beleben und den Fluss- und Stadtraum besser verknüpfen kann um eine gegenseitige Wechselwirkung zu entwickeln. Die Drau soll wieder in die Stadtmitte und in das Bewusstsein der Einwohner aufgenommen werden und aus ihrer "Isolation" gelöst werden. Es werden Potentiale aufgezeigt und Gebiete ausgewiesen, an denen das Konzept meiner Arbeit - die Draustege - ansetzt und mittels unterschiedlicher Interventionen eine Aufwertung des Uferraums erzielt. Durch das ausgearbeitete Konzept dieser Stege werden neue Sichtachsen und Blickbeziehungen zwischen der urbanen Struktur und dem Fluss hergestellt und geben neue Aussichten frei. Es bilden sich neue Schnittstellen, an denen das Element der Stadt zum Wasser verlängert wird und das Wasser wiederum in die Stadt hineingezogen wird.

Villach always fascinated me with its southern charm and its unconventionally character. The Draustadt, as it is also called, is not a typical austrian city: It is located in the heart of Carinthia and it combines the italian, slavic and austrian culture and at the same time it is a historic transportation hub in the south of Austria. With its partly italian flair, the city center has a very individual character, which is also determined by the river Drau. In this city I spent my school years and my free time, I noticed all these influences subconsciously and it has a lasting influence on me since then. But one thing became clear to me during my architectural studies regarding my hometown: Villach has many different identities and characters with a lot of potential, which, however, does not show to the outside. It seems that, especially in the last few decades, Villach was not worth to put a lot of effort and work into to achieve a harmonic and memorable cityscape. With this master thesis, I want to primarily provide ideas to strengthen the urban space Villach. Due to a design class called "Villach Waterfront", I faced the issues of the urban development of the city, especially the interaction between the town and the river, for the first time and since then I considered it as my task to work further along on this subject in more detail. This thesis gives an overview of the city life, it offers suggestions for improvment and wants to serve as a basis for discussion. It forms concepts on how to revitalize the waterfront and how to connect the river and the city in a better way to develop a mutual interaction. The river Drau should return to the city center and in the consciousness of the citizens and should be released from its "isolation". This diploma project shows the potentials of the city and designates certain areas, where the concept of my project - the "Draustege" - draws on. These jetties are opening new visual axis between the city and the river and are providing a new connection between these two elements. With different functions, depending on the location, the Draustege offer new open spaces alongside the river.
