Abstract:
The social school project Anajô of the Association Capoeira Angola Palmares is supporting more than 80 street children in the city of Guarabira, in the northeast of Brazil. This region is particularly disadvantaged. The education in Brazil is free, yet many children have no time to visit the classroom. They are in need to work for surviving or are at risk to fall in drug addiction or crime. On condition that these 'children in danger' attend regular school classes, the project provides them the possibility to practice Brazil's 'national sport' Capoeira, to be part of a community and offers them at least one hot meal per day. Unloved education in exchange for the possibility of 'playing' Capoeira is the concept of this social project - an incentive for affected children. The association Anajô is now considering a new school building because the current facilities are bursting at the seams and expensive in use.
The focus of this work lies in the feasibility and viability of a social project, from a socio-cultural as well as from an ecologic-economic perspective. Sustainability in architecture and constructing is ecology, economics, technical quality, process quality, location quality and especially socio-cultural quality. Keywords that are found very rarely in the design process for social projects. This project tries to show the possibilities and the difficulties of implementation for social school projects in a sustainable sense. It also deals with the design capabilities and quality of workmanship. In addition to designing the school and its technical implementation, the quality of the process is part of this work. A participatory approach will be developed for the planning and the execution phase, with the goal of an added value for the whole community and guaranteeing the best use of the invested money.
