Haberl, J. (2011).
In the context of this thesis a procedure for an acoustical evaluation of low noise road surfaces had been developed. This evaluation system provides a basis for the efficient use of low noise road surfaces on our road system. Only by clear classi cation of the noise reduction potential of the applied road surface courses an efficient use of these types of surfaces may be efficient.
Within the acoustical evaluation of low noise road surfaces an allocation of a certain road surface course, clearly characterized by the used mix- design, will be done using noise measurements.
The procedure is divided into three time dependent activities, the acoustical classi cation (in the context of the certi cation procedure), the acoustical acceptance testing of a classi ed road surface (in the context of the general acceptance testing) and the acoustical monitoring of a classi ed road surface regarding its lifetime (in the context of periodic tests).
This approach leads to a complete examination of the noise emission behavior of a certain road surface course over its entire lifetime. A comprehensive consideration is absolutely necessary because of the different long term behavior of different noise reducing surfaces regarding their type and construction (porous or dense surfaces).
For the first time an exact technological description of the materials used for a low noise road surface type to be classi ed will be integrated into an approach of an acoustical evaluation system.
Furthermore the acoustic durability of a low noise road surface type will also be integrated in this evaluation procedure. A clearly acoustically classi ed road surface product may be easier placed on the marked as "low noise", also new developments regarding low noise products can be easier enforced. In contrast, road authorities may apply clearly defi ned road surfaces regarding their noise emissions on their network and integrate these kind of surfaces in their planning processes. Similarly, this evaluation system may be consulted for efficient noise protection planning with corresponding comparisons of alternatives and therefore also be the basis for transport policy decisions.
