[5.16a] Architecture Climbingcenter Wachau The subject of the diploma thesis is the building design of a climbing centre for the Wachau region. The complex of buildings consists of a central access level on the ground floor which connects three higher structures. Separable routes for the two main entrances in the north and west allow for a variety of different access options. The boulder area located at the centre is the element connection all areas and can be used as an additional viewing platform for events. The three decentralised staircases and two elevators attached in addition serve both as the vertical connection between the individual levels and as the escape route for the underground parking located in the basement. In addition to the main use of climbing, the part of the building facing the Danube to the south has been planned to include a bistro and two seminar rooms. This part is also meant to serve as the base for the local climbing community. The main level which accommodates the entrance zone, climbing shop, changing rooms and the spacious boulder area enjoys indirect sunlight thanks to skylight domes. The climbing sections which are located to the east and west are subject to differentiated lighting via glazed openings in the walls and ceiling that offer interesting vistas of the surrounding environment. The big window front facing the outdoor climbing area to the south not only offers an additional connecting effect but also provides solar gains in the interior. The frame-like wall segments offset to each other provide for a maximum of available climbing space in the interior of the building as well as the outer shell. When it comes to outdoor architecture, the creation of communication zones and the provision of sufficient space for outdoor climbing were given high priority. In addition to the event area, the climbing zones and the boulder area on the northern wall of the bistro, it was also a central objective to render the climbing sport visible to the passers-by.
