Abstract:
In der vorliegenden Arbeit soll der Versuch unternommen werden, den Begriff der Campusarchitektur zu definieren. Mithilfe einer umfangreichen Recherche der Entwicklungsgeschichte der im Mittelalter gegründeten Universitäten Oxford und Cambridge in England wird der Vergleich mit den im 18. Jahrhundert entstandenen Colleges von Yale und Princeton in Amerika gewagt. Die daraus gewonnenen Erkenntnisse sollen veranschaulichen, ob sich für die Errichtung der Universitäten ein bauliches Gesamtkonzept feststellen lässt.<br />Im einleitenden Kapitel wird eine Einführung in die Thematik der Campusarchitektur gegeben, die mit einem kurzen Exkurs in die Bautypologie der Klosterarchitektur führt. Ein weiteres Kapitel beschäftigt sich mit den Phasen der Gotik in England und dem Gothic Revival in Amerika. Im Hauptteil manifestiert sich vorerst der Vergleich der englischen Universitäten von Oxford und Cambridge, um deren architektonische Entstehung nachzuzeichnen. Mit einer anschließenden Analyse der baulichen Entwicklungsphasen an der Yale und Princeton Universität wird der Terminus Campusarchitektur ersichtlich.<br />

This paper is an attempt to define the term 'Campusarchitecture'. The historical and architectural development of the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, founded during the Middle Ages in England, will be compared to those of Yale and Princeton, which were established during the 18th century in the United States. The findings will show if there is an architectural concept for building universities. The first part of the essay will explain important terms for this work.<br />A short description concerning architecture of monasteries will lead to the Gothic Style used during the Middle Ages in England and the interpretation of the Gothic Revival in the United States. The main part of the book deals with the architectural development and a comparison between the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. In conclusion the analysis of the conditions of the Universities of Yale and Princeton will define the denotation of 'Campusarchitecture'.<br />
