The subject of the present dissertation was the development of synthetic strategies and investigations regarding the reactivity of spirocyclic compounds with functional groups attached next to the spirocentre. Because of the rigid spirocyclic body and the chemical properties of a variety of possible functional groups, such compounds are of special interest for their potential application as chiral auxiliaries in asymmetric synthesis and as ligands for catalytically active complexes of transition metals. For the synthesis of concrete target compounds with a parent spiro[5.5]undecane-structure corresponding dihydroxy-, hydroxy-keto- and diketo-derivatives were used as common precursors. The precursors could be synthesized either directly via diastereoselective semipinacol-rearrangements of cyclic 2,3-epoxy-alcohols or by further oxidation- and reduction-steps of the primary rearrangement-products. By using spiro[5.5]undecan-1,7-dione as a precursor it was possible to synthesize a novel bicyclic ringsystem by a twofold intramolecular ring closure proceeding in only one step. The structure of this new ringsystem could be confirmed via modern 1D- and 2D-NMR-spectroscopical methods and X-ray analysis. In summary it was possible to develop a flexible and efficient route to a variety of functionalised spirocompounds and the obtained results are especially important for further investigations on this topic.
