Benito-Garagorri, D. (2007). Synthesis, characterization and catalytic activity of P-N bond containing transition metal pincer complexes [Dissertation, Technische Universität Wien]. reposiTUm. https://resolver.obvsg.at/urn:nbn:at:at-ubtuw:1-21246
Several novel tridentate PNP, PCP and NPN ligands and bidentate PN ligands were prepared by a convergent synthetic method via condensation reactions between aromatic diamines (2,6-diaminopyridine and 1,3-diaminobenzene) and amines (2-aminopyridine) with an array of chlorophosphines and chlorophosphites. The non commercially available chlorophosphines were prepared by reacting achiral and chiral diols and aminoalcohols with phosphorus trichloride.
The reaction of the ligands with diverse iron, nickel, palladium and platinum precursors gave a series of new metallorganic compounds of the general formula [PXPMLn] (X: N, C; M: Fe, Ni, Pd, Pt; Ln: CH3CN, CO, Cl, Br, CF3COO-).
The catalytic activity of several transition metal pincer complexes was tested in different coupling reactions. The iron(II) PNP pincer complexes are excellent and chemoselective catalysts for the coupling of aromatic aldehydes with ethyl diazoacetate (EDA) to give 3-hydroxyacrylates. A plausible mechanism for the catalytic cycle was proposed using DFT/B3LYP theoretical calculations.
The palladium(II) PNP and PCP pincer complexes were tested as catalysts in the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of aryl and alkyl bromides with phenylboronic acid. While the PNP turned out to be mediocre catalysts, the PCP complexes showed very high activities and were able to catalyze the coupling of neutral, deactivated and activated substrates with phenylboronic acid.
