Single crystalline FeCrNi - a model system for austentitic stainless steel in vacuum

Abstract

Für diese Diplomarbeit haben wir die die Oberfläche eines FeCr17Ni12(111) Einkristalls charakterisiert und erste Oxidationsexperimente durchgeführt. Die Zusammensetzung des Kristalls wurde so gewählt, dass sie ein Modellsystem für industriellen AISI 304 Edelstahl ist. Mit Augerelektronenspektroskopie (AES) haben wir das Segregationsverhalten der nichtmetallischen Bestandteile des Kristall von Raumtemperatur bis 750°C gemessen. Die häufigsten Segreganden sind Kohlenstoff, Silizium, Phosphor und Schwefel.Durch Zerstäuben und Glühen des Kristalls waren wir in der Lage vier unterschiedliche Oberflächen zu präparieren: Eine unrekonstruierte (1x1) Oberfläche, eine mit Kohlenstoff angereicherte "Uhrwerk" Rekonstruktion, eine mit Silizium angereicherte (√3×√3)R30° rekonstruierte Oberfläche und eine Phosphor und Schwefelreiche (3*√3×3*√3)R30° rekonstruierte Oberfläche. Während der Experimente fanden wir einen Phasenübergang von einer flächenzentrierten kubischen γ -Fe zur körperzentrierten kubischen α -Fe Struktur. Dieser Phasenübergang lässt sich vermeiden, indem man den Kristall nicht zwischen 300°C und 650°C glüht. Zur Reparatur des Kristalls muss dieser über 800°C geglüht werden. Wir haben die frisch zerstäubte (gesputterte) Oberfläche mithilfe von sauberem O2 Gas oxidiert und danach mithilfe von Röntgenphotoelektronenspektroskopie die chemische Zusammensetzung der Metalloxide an der Oberfläche analysiert. Das Rastertunnelmikroskop haben wir verwendet um Bilder der sauberen (√3×√3)R30° und (1x1) Oberfläche zu messen. Von der oxidierten (1x1) Oberfläche haben wir ebenfalls Bilder aufgenommen.Vom Oxidierungsexperiment wissen wir, dass die Oxidschicht hauptsächlich aus Eisen- und Chromoxid besteht und Nickeloxid nur einen kleinen Anteil der Oxid-schicht bildet. Die Oxidschicht selbst besteht nur aus einigen wenigen atomaren Lagen, sodass Photoelektronen mit einer Energie von 800 eV aus dem metallischen Hauppteil der Probe diese durchdringen können ohne inelastisch zu streuen. Mithilfe des Rastertunnelmikroskops ist sichtbar, dass das Oxid in Inseln sowohl auf den Terrassen der Oberfläche, als auch an den Stufenkanten wächst. In unseremExperiment kam es zu keiner strukturierten Anordnung in den Oxidinseln.

For this thesis, we performed measurements on and characterization of the surface of an FeCr17Ni12(111) single crystal. This crystal's composition is similar to AISI304 stainless steel, which is used in industrial applications. With Auger electron spectroscopy we measured the segregation of non-metallic constituents from the crystal at different temperatures from room temperature to750°C . We found common segregates to be carbon, silicon, phosphorous, and sulfur. By sputtering and annealing the crystal we prepared four distinct surfaces: An unreconstructed (1x1) surface, carbon rich clockwork reconstructed surface, silicon rich (√3×√3) R30° surface, and a phosphorous and sulfur rich (3*√3×3*√3) R30°.During experiments, we discovered a phase transition from face-centered cubic ( γ -Fe) to a body-centered cubic ( α -Fe) crystal structure. This happens when the crystal is annealed between 300◦C and 650◦C . For repairing, the crystal had to be moved to a different vacuum chamber and annealed above 800◦C . We performed oxidation experiments on the sputtered, (√3×√3) R30° and unreconstructed (1x1) surface using controlled amounts of clean O2 gas. We measured the oxidized surface with x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and analyzed the composition of the metal oxides at the surface. Using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM), we took images of the (√3×√3) R30°and imaged the unreconstructed (1x1) surface before and after exposure to oxygen. From oxidation experiments, we learned, that the oxide layer consists primarily of chromium and iron oxides. It forms on top of the metallic bulk of the sample. The oxide layer is only a few atomic layers thick, such that photoelectrons of 800 eV energy can pass the oxide layer without scattering inelastically. Nickel oxide is present in only small quantities, in the oxide layer. With scanning tunneling microscopy we found that the oxide grows in patches on the terraces, as well as at the step edges. The oxide layers did not appear structured in our prepared conditions.
