This thesis aims at studying the effect of an opening guide’s shape on the dynamic behavior of a baking system in order to optimize it. The opening guide is a spatially curved rail used to open and close baking tongs. The baking system is made by FHW Franz Haas Waffelmaschinen GmbH. It is a commercially used automated plant for manufacturing wafer products and foodstuff. To gain understanding of the dynamics of the opening and closing process of the baking tongs, first, a physical-mathematical simulation model is developed. For reasonable modeling, this process is divided into five sections. The analysis focuses on three major components of the system, which are the chain wheel, a set of baking tongs and the opening guide. A set of baking tongs consists of an upper and a lower baking plate. A multi-body modeling approach is applied to derive the equations of motion of the upper baking plate. An inverse dynamics analysis is used to compute the forces and moments acting on the system using the software package MATLAB. Results derived from the baseline set-up are checked for plausibility and validated by measurements performed on the corresponding baking system. Next, the shape of the opening guide is optimized to reduce the mechanical loads of the components. Therefore, a specific objective function is minimized and constraints given by the baking process are considered. This shape is output in Cartesian coordinates to allow fully-automated manufacturing of the opening guide. The effect of objective parameters on the derived shape of the opening guide is demonstrated by studying respective forces. Finally, necessary steps to further enhance usability of the derived software are suggested.
