Abstract:
Thiophene ring-fragmentation reactions enable to conveniently prepare Z-isomers of ene-yne type compounds. This structural scaffold features a broad scope of potential modifications and functionalizations but also revealed importance as synthon for total synthesis. The objective of this thesis is the development of an advanced understanding of the reactivity and applicability of ene-yne motives. Hence, investigations focus on an improved synthesis regarding Z-selectivity and efficiency, approaches to also obtain E-isomers, determination of ring-opening threshold temperatures as well as pathways of new functionalization. The expansion of the strategies towards novel spacer-extended ene-yne compounds via a tandem ring-fragmentation approach was accomplished as a step to interesting building blocks for e.g. material science. In particular, an oxidation procedure to selectively oxidize the methlythio groups to sulfone moieties represents a unique approach to invert intrinsic electronic properties of the materials. Additionally, detailed examinations of the crystallization behavior of ene-yne structures are outlined, since crystallographic aspects are of crucial importance for potential applications in organic functional materials. The functionalization by Cu-catalyzed cycloaddition ("click" chemistry) yielded triazole based compounds showing attractive nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. The materials obtained reveal non-centrosymmetric crystallization and are capable of second harmonic generation. Thus, the developed molecular scaffold represents an interesting type of NLO chromophore. Moreover, the development of modern analytical methods to support the synthetic efforts was matter of interest. In this context, a mid-infrared spectroscopy technique applying an ATR-IR probe to inline monitor highly reactive organo-lithium key-intermediates even under non-thermal conditions is being established.
