As the global population ages and the occurrence of bone fractures, bone tissue related diseases and injuries rises, the need for bone repair solutions has become more urgent. Traditional non-degradable methods have been used to address these challenges, but they present several limitations, including the need for removal surgeries and the risk of complications such as infections, chronic inflammation, or implant rejection. These shortcomings highlight the need for innovative approaches in the field of bone tissue engineering (BTE). Synthetic biodegradable bone grafts produced using lithography-based additive manufacturing are designed to gradually degrade over time and be resorbed by the body which results in a stepwise replacement of the artificial graft by endogenous tissue. This characteristic eliminates the need for secondary surgeries and reduces the risk of chronic inflammation leading to overall better patient recovery. The use of biodegradable bone substitute materials is therefore a promising strategy to improve patient outcomes, reduce healthcare costs, and minimize complications associated with long-term implant retention. Nonetheless, there are many requirements that these scaffolds must meet, including appropriate degradation rates, good biocompatibility, and suitable (thermo-)mechanical properties. With that goal in mind, new monomers were synthesized and tested in formulations to investigate their (thermo-)mechanical performance and biocompatibility, as well as their applicability in 3D printing and their biodegradability.
