Einfluss von Antioxidantien auf die Alterung von Polyethylen

Abstract

Diese Arbeit ist Teil des Projekts "Innovatives PP-Recycling". Da Polypropylen-Abfall meistens auch Polyethylen enthält, soll hier der Einfluss von Antioxidantien auf die Alterung von Polyethylen hoher Dichte (en: High Density Polyethylene - PE-HD) überprüft. Dabei werden die PE-Proben mit einem Nachgebrauchskunststoff verglichen. Es wird einerseits PE verwendet, so wie es der Hersteller liefert, andererseits wird diesem jeglicher Stabilisator entzogen, um unverfälschte Ergebnisse für die Eigenschaften von Polyethylen zu erhalten. Zusätzlich wird eine Reihe an Proben erstellt, die verschiedene Konzentrationen eines phenolischen und eines phosphitischen Antioxidans enthalten. Zur Alterung werden alle Proben bei verschiedenen Temperaturen in Wärmschränken gelagert und regelmäßig geprüft. Der Fortschritt der Alterung wird dabei in gleichmäßigen Abstanden gemessen. Es wird die Auswirkung der von verschiedenen Stabilisatoren auf PE und dessen thermooxidative Beständigkeit überprüft. Dabei wird ein primäres Antioxidans, Irganox 1010, und eine Kombination aus einem primären und einem sekundären Antioxidans, Irganox B 225, verwendet. Der primäre Stabilisator gehört zur Gruppe der sterisch gehinderten Phenole. Als sekundärer Stabilisator wird Irgafos 168, ein Antioxidans auf Phosphit-Basis, verwendet. Die Proben werden bei 80°C, 100°C, 120°C und 130°C in Öfen ausgelagert und regelmäßigen Eigenschaftsprüfungen unterzogen. Es werden sowohl eine mechanische Prüfung, thermische Analysen und FTIR Spektroskopien durchgeführt. Als mechanische Prüfung dient der Zugversuch. Als thermische Analyseverfahren wird die Oxidationsinduktionszeit (OIT) gemessen und thermogravimetrische Analysen (TGA) in Luftatmosphäre durchgeführt. In der FTIR Spektroskopie wird beobachtet, wie die Konzentration der Stabilisatoren über die Zeit abnimmt. Zusätzlich wird beobachtet, welche Abbauprodukte sich bilden. Es wird versucht eine Kalibriergerade zur Bestimmung unbekannter Konzentrationen der Stabilisierung zu finden. Mit der OIT lässt sich der aktuelle Stabilisierungsgrad darstellen. Mittels der TGA wird der Abbau des Kunststoffs überprüft. Zusätzlich wird versucht, die Vorgänge bei den verschiedenen Temperaturen in Verbindung zu setzten und eine Beziehung nach Arrhenius zu finden. Es kann für die Konzentrationen beider Stabilisatoren eine Kalibrierkurve zum Anfangszeitpunkt vor der Auslagerung, sowohl im FTIR-Spektrum wie auch bei den OIT-Werten erstellt werden. Die OIT nimmt linear über die Auslagerungszeit ab. Auf die TGA Ergebnisse hat die Stabilisatorkonzentration keinen Einfluss, es wird nur Kettenabbau sichtbar. Auch der Zugversuch gibt keine Aussage über die enthaltene Menge an Antioxidantien. Nach 120 Tagen haben sowohl die Proben aus dem 80°C und dem 100°C Ofen keinen Abbau gezeigt. PE ist sehr temperaturbeständig. Der Versuch musste für den 120°C Ofen nach drei Tagen abgebrochen werden, da die Proben ihre Form verloren. Bei 130°C zeigt sich bereits nach einem Tag Abbau. Es kann keine Beziehung in Anlehnung an Arrhenius für den Abbau gefunden werden, da zu wenige Daten vorhanden sind. Für den Stabilisatorverlust, der durch die OIT-Messungen sichtbargemacht werden kann, ergeben sich bei einer Extrapolation zu 60°C realistische Werte.

This thesis is part of the project "Innovative PP recycling". Polypropylene waste usually includes polyethylene. Therefore the purpose of this thesis is to study the influence of oxidation stabilizers on the aging behavior of high density polyethylene (PE-HD). The study compares the PE to a post consumer polymer. The laboratory tests are performed with two types of PE, either unchanged in an "as received" condition or in a modified condition where all stabilizers are extracted, to obtain unadulterated results regarding the properties of polyethylene. In addition, the laboratory test uses a number of samples containing various concentrations of phenolic antioxidant and phosphitic antioxidant. All samples are stored at different temperatures in furnaces (80 °C, 100 °C, 120 °C and 130 °C) and measured regularly to determine the aging progress. The laboratory test examines the effect of various stabilizers on PE and its thermooxidative stability. For this purpose Irganox 1010, a primary antioxidant, and Irganox B 225, a combination of a primary and a secondary antioxidant, are used. The primary stabilizer belongs to the group of sterically hindered phenols. As secondary stabilizer Irgafos 168, a phosphite-based antioxidant, is used. The laboratory tests cover mechanical testing, thermal analysis and FTIR spectroscopy. The tensile test is used, as mechanical testing method. Regarding thermal analysis, the oxidation induction time (OIT) is measured and a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is carried out in air atmosphere. The FTIR spectroscopy shows a decrease of the concentration of the stabilizer over time. In addition, it is observed that degradation products are formed. The FTIR spectroscopy is used to calculate a calibration curve in order to determine unknown concentrations of stabilizers. The degree of stabilization and the stabilizer consumption can be measured by means of OIT. The degradation of the used polymers is checked with the TGA. Furthermore an attempt is made to find a relationship according to Arrhenius. The results of the laboratory tests show that a calibration curve can be calculated for the concentrations of both stabilizers, both in the FTIR spectrum and the OIT. The OIT value decreases linearly with the aging time in the oven. The stabilizer concentration does not have any impact on the TGA results; only chain degradation can be detected. The tensile test cannot be used to determine the antioxidants content. After 120 days, the samples from the 80 °C test setup as well as from the 100 °C test setup have shown no signs of degradation. Polyethylene has a high thermal stability. The test had to be stopped for the 120 °C setup after 3 days since the samples lost their shape. At the 130 °C test setup degradation is already evident after 1 day A relationship based on the concept of Arrhenius for the aging of polyethylene cannot be determined due to lack of sufficient data. An extrapolation to 60 °C for the stabilizer loss, which is based on OIT data, results in realistic values.
