Measurable selection in optimal transport and Skorokhod embeddings

Abstract

Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit verschiedenen stochastischen Optimierungsproblemen. Die behandelten Optimierungsaufgaben sind bei festem Input schon gut in der Literatur untersucht. Hier werden neue Einblicke für den Fall gegeben, dass sich der Input messbar in Bezug auf einen Maßraum ändert. Mit Hilfe von Auswahltheoremen werden Lösungen der Optimierungsaufgaben so gewählt, dass sie sich messbar indizieren lassen. Solche Resultate werden für Probleme des optimalen Transports, Skorokhod-Einbettungen und das Auffinden von Baryzentren von Wahrscheinlichkeitsmaßen in Wassersteinräumen gezeigt. Weiters wird der Zusammenhang zwischen der Regularität von Kostenfunktionen und der daraus resultierenden Zielfunktion behandelt und es wird gezeigt, wie sich allgemeine Optimierungsprobleme auf Probleme des optimalen Transports reduzieren lassen. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist, einfache, aber starke Sätze zu geben, die die Messbarkeit von Familien von stochastischen Optimierungsproblemen sicherstellen.

This thesis is focused on different stochastic optimization problems. While the problems are well studied for a fixed input, this thesis adds new insights for cases where the input varies in a measurable way with respect to a measurable index space. Using selection theorems solutions to the stochastic optimization problems are chosen in such a way that they can be indexed measurably. In particular, optimal transport problems, Skorokhod embeddings and barycenters of probability measures in Wasserstein spaces are considered. Furthermore, the relationship between the regularity of cost functions and resulting target functions for optimal transport problems are discussed and a way to reduce general optimization problems to optimal transport problems is shown. The goal of this thesis is to provide simple but powerful theorems to guarantee measurability of solutions when families of optimization problems are considered.
