Abstract:
Photoacid generators (PAGs) such as sulfonium hexafluorophosphates and perfluorinated tetraphenylborates are well established initiators in the field of cationic photopolymerization and already applied in a high-temperature 3D printing process called hot lithography. The new cyanide-ligated boron-based photoinitiator SBCN shows lower molecular weight compared to state-of-the-art borates and is less expensive to synthesize from commercial starting materials. With epoxy monomer BADGE, this new cationic photoinitiator outperforms commercial initiators in a broad range of temperatures. Formulations containing SBCN are thermally and storage stable and can be sensitized by anthracene derivatives. Hot lithography was carried out successfully at 90 °C and, compared to state-of-the-art sulfonium initiators, the printed parts exhibit excellent layer quality and low discoloration.
